The Importance of a Packing List for Caravan Trips

You know what I just discovered? The importance of writing a packing list when we’re heading away in the caravan. Yeah, yeah, I know it’s pretty simple and not rocket science, but for a bloke who usually does things on the fly, I’ve never really cared for lists. For the most part, it’s always worked out okay for me. Until recently, when I realised that for every single trip we’ve done in the caravan, I’ve forgotten at least one really important thing I’ve needed in the kitchen. Not ideal!

Shon’s been banging on about me writing lists for years because she’s a serial list writer. I mean, she’s got lists for EVERYTHING (you should have seen the lists she did for Japan—hectic). She also doesn’t forget much, so I guess that’s saying something.

Anyway, we went away down south recently, and in true Drapes fashion, I didn’t write a list. I forgot one of the MOST important items for the trip—the pressure cooker. I had bought a heap of beautiful beef that cost me an arm and a leg the day before, and I planned on making a delicious slow-cooked beef curry (with a recipe to share with you!). But my plan had to change drastically when I realised that I hadn’t packed the pressure cooker. I was gutted and knew it was time I changed my ways and started to take a leaf out of Shon’s book and write a bloody list for next time.

So, I thought I’d share with you our long-weekend packing list for future reference next time you jump in your caravan, so you don’t forget the pressure cooker like I did and end up eating cheese and crackers for dinner.

Shon tells me that she writes these lists in her ‘Notes’ app on the iPhone, and then she just goes through and ticks everything off once it’s been packed. She reckons that grouping the items under their own category really helps her out when she’s packing for the kids, so I’d recommend doing that too!
